  • While studying Ancient Rome, 5th graders in Laurie Thomas' class took part in an "archeological dig." After the students unearthed the items they wrote about the significance of their findings.
  • Confederate Museum

  • Third graders at Mitchell Road Christian Academy (MRCA) visited the Confederate Museum as part of their study of the Civil War. Caroline Keck's class is pictured with the cannon in front of the museum.
  • Color Theory Art Project

  • Fourth graders explored color with their classmates in Ruth Thomas' art class. The students discussed "Why God created colors?", "What would our world be like without color?", and "How can colors be used to communicate?" For their final project the students learned a little about Andy Warhol and then chose an everyday object to draw using different color schemes immitating Warhol's distinct use of color.

  • Their jobs were quite diverse: a mom with a home business helping people with computer needs; a dad who is a geologist; and a grandfather who works with Habitat for Humanity to help build homes all around the world. These are just some of the careers students in Debbie Teague's first grade heard about firsthand from parents and grandparents during their study of jobs in the community. The students then reported on a career of their choice complete with any special clothing or "tools" they would need in their selected job.
  • Checkbook Challenge

  • Students at MRCA got some practical experience with math recently. After studying addition and subtraction of decimals, 5th graders in Lisa Hall's class participated in a project called Checkbook Challenge where they kept up with a checkbook and had lots of practice managing and spending money.

  • Sixth graders e-mailed missionaries in Spanish speaking countries to learn more about the countries and then recorded the information on posters.
  • The Sign of the Beaver

  • Students in Sandy Waugh's Language Arts class have been reading "The Sign of the Beaver" by Elizabeth George Speare. In the book, Native Americans teach the main character how to play a game that the boys in their tribe play. So the 5th graders paid close attention to the rules of the game given in the book and then actually played it. The object is to keep all of your sticks, but when you lose all of your sticks, you have to "give up" something. Students had a great time "giving up" their shoes, socks, hair ties, and other items. And the game came alive by actually playing as the Native American children played.
  • Mystery Reader in First Grade

  • Mitch Jenkins surprised Donna Casey's first graders, including his own daughter, when he was the Mystery Reader for the week. Students receive clues before the reader arrives and try to guess just who it might be that's coming to share a story with them.

  • Second graders in Caroline Almand's class read the classic tale "The Hole in the Dike" and then illustrated a cut-out of the story's hero Peter.
