The Sign of the Beaver
Students in Sandy Waugh's Language Arts class have been reading "The Sign of the Beaver" by Elizabeth George Speare. In the book, Native Americans teach the main character how to play a game that the boys in their tribe play. So the 5th graders paid close attention to the rules of the game given in the book and then actually played it. The object is to keep all of your sticks, but when you lose all of your sticks, you have to "give up" something. Students had a great time "giving up" their shoes, socks, hair ties, and other items. And the game came alive by actually playing as the Native American children played.
